UK CREATIVE INDUSTIES SECTOR
Creative Industries is now the second largest sector in the UK after finance.
The Creative sector is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. It is a key element of both the creative economy and the information society, offeing an increasingly significant source of revenue, employment and cultural expression.
This sprawling sector, from film production to software development, represents 7.3% of GDP and employs around one million people.
However, the sector faces major hurdles. The government has recently launched a strategy aimed at addressing intellectual property issues. The digital world is awash with piracy and laws are hard to reproduce in the digital world.
At Clear Intelligence, we make it our business to monitor all Creative Industries. Here are just a few interesting trends:
- Of all PC software sold in the UK in 2007, 41.4% was related to games (a drop of 17.2% since 2002) and 12.5% was education/leisure (a drop of 15.7%)
- The prospect of accessing software from online hard drives is an emerging development that is already seeing involvement from the likes of Google
- Internet e-tailers and websites operated by traditional high street retailers now account for over a third of the retail market
- As children are increasingly using computers for schoolwork and leisure, there is a clear need for security software to protect children from ‘nasties’ on the web as well as protecting PCs from viruses
- Computer games are common in three-people households – probably as entertainment for an only child.
